MINISTRY OF INFRASTRUCTURE, HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT COMMISSIONS UPGRADED MWEEKE TOLL PLAZA IN MONGU DISTRICT

News

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, led by Hon. Eng. Charles L. Milupi, today officially commissioned the upgraded Mweeke Toll Plaza in Mongu District.

This milestone is part of the government’s broader initiative to improve road infrastructure across the country, ensuring that Zambia’s roads remain safe, efficient, and economically beneficial for all users.

Key Highlights from the Event:
* A New Milestone in Tolling
”The New Dawn Government has placed high priority on the development of infrastructure such as roads…Road construction and maintenance account for a major capital investment by the government,” stated Hon. Eng. Milupi, underscoring the importance of roads as key drivers of national development. The upgraded Mweeke Toll Plaza, now classified as a Class B toll station, reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure.
* A Strategic Upgrade for Increased Traffic
The upgrade, which cost K7.3 million, is a response to increasing traffic volumes on Zambia’s core road network, especially with growing trade links. The Mweeke Toll Plaza is expected to play a pivotal role, especially with the upcoming Tapo-Kalabo-Sikongo Road project and the planned construction of a border post. Once completed, this road will form a key part of the Lobito Corridor, facilitating trade between Zambia and Angola. “Once completed, this road will cause the toll plaza to be upgraded to Type A,” said Hon. Milupi.
* Recognizing a National Hero
As part of today’s ceremony, Hon. Milupi announced that the toll plaza will be renamed to Nalumino Mundia Toll Plaza, in honor of Zambia’s first Minister of Commerce and Industry and the country’s fourth Prime Minister. Nalumino Mundia, a renowned freedom fighter, played a significant role in Zambia’s independence struggle and later served as a diplomat in countries such as the United States, Brazil, and Peru. “Nalumino Mundia, after whom this toll plaza is named, was a renowned freedom fighter…he later became a diplomat,” the Minister stated.
* A Cost-Effective and Timely Project
The upgrade was carried out by the Road Development Agency (RDA) through internal expertise, resulting in a project that is both cost-effective and timely, aligning with President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive for government projects to be delivered at the right cost, on time, and with high quality.
Why This Matters:
This upgrade is more than just a physical improvement; it’s a step toward enhancing Zambia’s connectivity and supporting economic growth. With increased trade flows, better road networks, and a well-maintained toll system, the country is poised to attract more investments, boost commerce, and create job opportunities for its citizens.
The Mweeke Toll Plaza upgrade is also a significant contribution to road safety and efficiency. It ensures that motorists can pass through with ease while also generating revenue that will be reinvested into the maintenance and development of Zambia’s infrastructure.
What’s Next:
The government’s focus on upgrading infrastructure doesn’t stop here. With the Tapo-Kalabo-Sikongo Road to Angola set to begin this year, the transformation of Zambia’s road network is entering an exciting new phase.
