The Minister of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, Hon. Eng. Charles Lubasi Milupi, has expressed satisfaction with the quality and progress of works on the Ndola-Sakania-Mufulira Road project. This project is part of a broader initiative that includes the development of the Sakania Border Post, aiming to improve road infrastructure, streamline customs procedures, reduce transit times, and enhance cross-border trade efficiency.
Project Overview
– Total Investment : $76.1 million
– Implementation Model : Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Government and Messrs. Jaswin Ports Limited
– Scope of Work : Road construction and border infrastructure development, including:
– Roads : 17.26km Ndola-Sakania Road, 41.7km Sakania to Mufulira Road, and 2.6km selected sections of the Ndola Sakania Road in rigid pavement
– Border Post : New border post at Sakania Border with facilities such as power substation, staff apartments, offices, animal holding area, parking areas, fire station, bank, scanner, incinerator, restaurants, public toilets, and clinic
– Toll Plazas :Two four-gate toll plazas, one along the Sakania-Mufulira Road and one along the Ndola-Sakania road
Housing :Twelve two-bedroomed houses for border staff and hostels for concessionaire’s staff
Police Station : One police station at Sakania Border
Progress Update
– Financial Closure :Reached in 2024
– Road Works: 17.26Km Ndola-Sakania Road completed substantially, with final tests on workmanship done to allow the project to go into Provisional Commercial Operation Date (PCOD)
– Toll Plaza: Tom Mtine Toll gate completed substantially and ready for operations
– Partial Practical Completion Certificate (PPCC) Concessionaire has applied for PPCC
Project Impact
This project is expected to significantly improve trade and transportation between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), creating jobs and boosting economic development in the region. The Ndola-Sakania-Mufulira Road is a key economic artery in Zambia, connecting the Copperbelt Province to the DRC border and serving as a major transit route for goods and passengers.
The Minister is on the Copperbelt where is is leading a delegation of Private Public Partnership Council of Ministers to check on progress on the road projects.
