The Zambia National Service (ZNS), working closely with the Road Development Agency (RDA) has moved swiftly to address the washaway at Kankumba Stream on the Great East Road, ensuring that traffic disruption is minimized following recent heavy rains.
The joint emergency response saw the successful construction of a temporary detour at the affected section, located about 87 kilometres from the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport Roundabout.
The road was damaged on 25 December after intense rainfall led to the failure of a steel culvert, washing away nearly five metres of the road embankment.
Beyond the detour, ZNS engineers and RDA technical teams have made substantial progress in installing a temporary ACROW Bridge across the damaged section. Once completed later today, the bridge will provide a safe and reliable crossing for motorists while permanent rehabilitation plans are finalized.
Motorists have been advised to comply with traffic guidance and diversion signage installed by the two institutions to ensure safety and smooth movement through the area.
The Road Development Agency has acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the incident and commended the rapid intervention by ZNS, assuring the public that collaborative efforts remain focused on restoring normal traffic operations along this critical transport corridor.
