A total of 26.5 kilometres of the LusakaโMongu M9 Road have so far been opened to the public as rehabilitation works continue between Tateyoyo Gate and the Katunda/Lukulu Junction in Western Province.
Western Province Minister Hon. Kapelwa Mbangweta, MP, inspected the road yesterday and expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded so far, noting that the opened section is already easing movement for motorists and surrounding communities.
โThis progress is encouraging and demonstrates Governmentโs commitment to improving road infrastructure in Western Province. The opening of this section is already improving connectivity and supporting economic activities for our people.โ
The project involves the rehabilitation of approximately 87.3 kilometres of the road and is being implemented by the Road Development Agency (RDA) with funding from the Road Fund, at a revised contract sum of K1.56 billion, with completion scheduled for December 2026.
According to the latest project update, works have reached 33 percent physical progress, with major activities including road widening, earthworks, selected layer construction, stabilised sub-base, crushed stone base and asphalt surfacing.
RDA Western Province Roads Engineer, Moses Chitambala said the contractor is working in phases to ensure that sections which meet the required standards are opened to traffic while works continue on the remaining stretches.
Eng. Chitambala added that strict quality control measures are being applied to guarantee the durability and safety of the road.
The Minister commended the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation, and supervising engineers for the progress made so far, and urged them to maintain momentum to ensure the project is completed within the scheduled timeframe.
He reaffirmed Governmentโs commitment to improving road infrastructure in the province, stating that good road networks are critical to economic development, service delivery and improved livelihoods.
Works on the remaining sections of the road are ongoing.
