Zambiaโ€™s ambition to close its long-standing housing gap is taking a decisive step forward.
The Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Eng. Charles Milupi, has inspected the Prefabricated Concrete Panel Housing Factory located in the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zoneโ€”an initiative widely regarded as a transformative milestone for the countryโ€™s housing sector.
The project is a strategic partnership between China Jiangsu International Corporation and the National Housing Authority (NHA). At its core is advanced prefabrication technology that allows homes to be manufactured in concrete panel form, offering flexibility in design while significantly reducing construction time and costs.
โ€œThis is a modern housing solution that gives customers the freedom to choose the design of their homes,โ€ the Minister said during the inspection. He commended the quality of work undertaken so far and encouraged members of the public to visit the facility and appreciate the innovation first-hand, noting that finishing works are nearing completion ahead of commissioning.
Acting NHA Chief Executive Officer, Ernest Muleya, emphasised the projectโ€™s relevance to Zambiaโ€™s current needs. With the national housing deficit estimated at approximately 1.5 million units, he described the technology as a timely response that addresses both affordability and supply challenges. By reducing reliance on scarce construction materials and streamlining production, the factory is expected to deliver homes faster and at lower cost.
Operating under Zambia National Shelter Green Housing Production Limited, the facility is designed to produce durable, affordable housing at scale. Beyond homes, the project is also expected to generate employment, transfer skills, and stimulate broader economic activity.
As Zambia moves towards commissioning this facility, the project stands as a clear signal of the Governmentโ€™s commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions that turn policy aspirations into tangible outcomes for citizens.
